ABOUT PER SE PSYCHOLOGY

A grounded and collaborative approach to psychological care

Per Se Psychology was founded on the belief that meaningful psychological work begins with understanding the underlying emotional mechanisms that shape thoughts, behaviours, relationships, and patterns of distress.

Therapy is approached collaboratively and at a pace that respects each individual’s readiness, personal experiences, and therapeutic goals.

Collaborative

Built around your pace, readiness, and personal experience. Therapy is approached together, with care and respect for your individual needs.

Mechanism-focused

Understanding the deeper emotional and relational patterns contributing to distress — not just addressing surface-level symptoms.

Human-centred

Shaped by professional training, lived experience, and a compassionate therapeutic relationship that supports meaningful change.

MEET DAVID HUFFINES

A practical and human approach shaped by both professional and lived experience

David originally trained and worked within a blue-collar trade environment before later pursuing psychology after his own experiences with mental health and psychotherapy significantly changed the direction of his life.

After returning to university as a mature-age student, he completed a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours and later undertook a two-year internship pathway toward registration as a psychologist.

His therapeutic work is strongly informed by Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), attachment theory, and integrative evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, and Positive Psychology.

APPROACH

Therapy that is collaborative, paced, and mechanism-focused

Collaborative process

David works alongside you to explore emotional patterns, relational experiences, and the challenges contributing to distress while respecting your readiness and informed consent.

Paced to your readiness

Each session unfolds at a pace that feels manageable and supportive. Nothing is rushed, assumed, or pushed beyond what you feel ready to explore.

Evidence-based methods

Drawing on approaches including ISTDP, attachment theory, CBT, ACT, and integrative evidence-based psychotherapy tailored to your individual needs and goals.
